Entering the Process Data
main topic

The Six Sigma Process Report works with data in subgroups or with individual observations.

You can structure your subgroup data down a column or across rows. Here is the same data set, with subgroups of size 5, structured both ways:

Note that the first five observations (subgroup 1) in the left-side data set are the first row of the right-side data set, the second five observations (subgroup 2) are across the second row, and so on.

The way you specify data columns in the Six Sigma Process Report dialog box depends on the structure of your worksheet, as described below.

Subgroups in Rows

Under Data are arranged as, click Subgroups across rows of and enter the data columns.

Subgroups or Individual Observations in Columns

- Individual observations

Under Data are arranged as, click Single column and enter a data column in the text box. Enter 1 in the Subgroup size text box.

- Same-size subgroups

Under Data are arranged as, click Single column and enter a data column in the text box. Then enter the subgroup size in the Subgroup size text box.

- Unequal-size subgroups

When subgroups are of unequal size, you must structure your data in a column, then create a second column of subscripts which serve as subgroup indicators. Each time a subscript changes, a new subgroup begins. In the following example, C1 contains the data and C2 contains the subgroup indicators:

and so on

Subgroup 1 has 3 observations, subgroup 2 has 6 observations, and so on.

To specify the data in the dialog box: Under Data are arranged as, click Single column and enter a data column in the text box. Enter a subscript column in the Subgroup size text box.
