In August 2016, Queensland Parliament passed new legislation requiring interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in every bedroom of a residential dwelling, in addition to the current practice of putting smoke alarms in hallways outside of bedrooms.
I have started to see a bit of misinformation being thrown around about this already. It is mostly coming from suppliers and installers of smoke alarms, presumably wanting to drum up business (understandably). However, there is no cause for alarm (pardon the pun), as the implementation of this new legislation will be phased in over 10 years from 1 January 2017. There is no mandatory requirement for homeowners to race out and have smoke alarms installed, although of course it wouldn't hurt to have your family and tenants better protected - just remember to make sure they are working. Having five smoke alarms is not much use if none of them are working...
*UPDATE* - here is more detailed technical information from QFES
The paragraph below is copied from the QFES website ;
What is changing?
All Queensland dwellings will be required to have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all bedrooms, in hallways that connect bedrooms with the rest of the dwelling and on every level.
When is this happening?
There is a 10-year phased roll-out of interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in Queensland that will happen over three specific periods starting from 1 January 2017. This means interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms are required for compliance:
From 1 January 2017: in all new dwellings and substantially renovated dwellings (this applies to building applications submitted from 1 January 2017).
From 1 January 2022: in all domestic dwellings leased and sold.
From 1 January 2027: in all other domestic dwellings.
